Long Answer

1. The storm foreshadows the other tragedies. While frightening, the storm does not hurt the ship much. People are safe at that point, but it turns out the life jackets and other preparations become necessary. The earthquake and resulting tsunamis create another “storm” for people to try to survive, this one much worse, with lives lost. (Various chapters)

2. Shy feels a variety of emotions heading toward home. He is determined to find his family and get the vaccine to the people who can help others with it. He is curious and worried about who survived the earthquake and Romero Disease. As he sits with Carmen, he realizes the “miracle” of surviving all they had and seems to feel some peace in the moment of being alive, but in the midst of it all, he is overwhelmed at all they have been through.
